Biography

“you should start a blog”
- Sarah Rice, Sentient Communications (http://sentientbeing.wordpress.com/) to Dave Gale, storm - June 2006.
So you can blame all this in her really!

Blogs have fascinated me for a while now, but being the way I am, I’d rather read about what others have to say than craft something for someone else to read. I am persuaded though that in the interests of learning more about this exercise, and exploring the medium for communicating with my colleagues and friends as well as anyone out there prepared to discuss topics of interest in Telecoms here in SA and abroad, I will prevail.

Let’s see where this goes, shall we? (hopefully not to hell in handbasket!)

I was the Business Development Director at Storm Voice and Data, a South African telecoms company I helped found in 1999. I was responsible for product strategy, regulatory issues and strategic initiatives, as well as being company spokesperson. I started in Telecoms in 1983 when I was employed by the then P&T (now Telkom) and was given a bursary and study leave to obtain a BSc in Electrical Engineering. 7 years at UCT left me with and MSc and a head stuffed full of theory.

Having sold Storm, I'm now trying to work out what to do with the rest of my life.

My areas of interest range through Voice over IP, Open Source Telephony, Disruptive technologies in general to the impact of “progress” on quality of life, life with a Mac, the energy crunch, etc, etc..

I observe with a mixture of interest, glee, horror and delight the rapid changes that digitalisation and the spread of the Internet Protocol are forging.
